Eugenol solution in dentistry is an oily liquid with a strong aromatic odor and flavor, primarily extracted from clove oil. It possesses analgesic, antiseptic, and obtundent (soothing) properties, making it a versatile material in various dental applications. Commonly used in conjunction with zinc oxide to form zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) cement, it serves as a temporary filling material, a sedative dressing for deep cavities, and a root canal sealer. Eugenol can also be used alone as a topical analgesic to relieve dental pain or as a component in periodontal dressings. While its soothing effects are beneficial, eugenol can be irritating to some tissues, and its use is sometimes avoided in direct pulp capping procedures.
